The energy behind Humphrey Navarro is undeniably boundless. Anecdotes shared freely among his former kitchen crew and peers talks about a Chef with headphones dancing to the music only he can hear while conceptualizing new menus and doing butchery work at the same time. Other swear Humphrey parties as hard as he works and can stay up to the wee hours of the morning and report in time for the first shift without missing a beat. Most, if not all, talk about Humphrey’s intensity and deep passion for food in all its colors, textures and taste like a musician fine-tuning an instrument to captivate, enthrall or intrigue. >>>click here to continue |

It is no wonder then that this talented, multi-awarded, Chef’s on Parade Hall of Fame awardee had branched out into another area close to his heart – kitchen work wear. He calls his work wear company Chef Republic… yup, just like a country! Humphrey explains Chef Republic connotes the unspoken brotherhood of chefs across the globe that could be likened to having a country of their very own. Asked how the idea behind Chef Republic came to be, Humphrey explains “I took the basic chef’s jacket and re-designed it. I wanted to transform it to something different enough to make a statement but without making it look like anything but a chef’s uniform. I wanted the best quality of cotton, the best cut, the best buttons and literally the best of everything. I had a hard time looking for people who can do it according to my specifications. I learned that if I wanted to do it right, then I had to do it myself. So I took a vacation to begin the business of making chefs feel good at work.” Humprey believes that if you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you do good and you cook good. Hence, Chef Republic was born in November of 1995. Chef Republic work wear comes in various designs named after varying intensities of heat – Farenheit is the casual |
work wear line and Celcius is the plain white line. Hot Wave designs come with the asian influence, and Steam is formal chefs’ wear with pockets. Finally, there’s Lava which according to Humprey is his non-traditional, ultra-chic line of chefs coats! The Ladies work wear line comes in various shades of blue, black and white, reds and cranberry, orange, greens and the traditional white. Humphrey states that all Chef Republic work wear were designed, sourced and supervised by him with special emphasis on quality control. Humphrey’s list of clients reads like the Who’s Who list in Philippine Culinary. And since he began exporting, it could, in a few years time, read International Culinary… but then again, it shouldn’t surprise those who know the maverick chef who had the vision to name it Chef Republic.
